This program is designed for youth ages 12-18 who also attend at least one other day of programming at Open Connections. At the core of the OC Philosophy is the belief in the value of engaging in Real Work. Real Work is most easily defined by contrasting it with its counterpart, make-work. Real Work is something that is done to produce a useful result and which needs to be done. In the context of “learning” or “educational” situations, were the “student” not to have performed the Real Work activity, someone else would have had to.

Shaping Your Life — Left Brain

Left Brain participants will mostly focus on math and the sciences, in an “OC way” (the importance of truly understanding a concept, rather than rote memorization), and take advantage of OC’s picturesque 28-acre campus (including ponds, a creek, and woods), as well as our well-equipped science lab and digital room. The process of how concepts are introduced is instrumental to our approach. With that in mind, the most important aspect of our programming is placing math and science in a meaningful context to young people. Teens are excited by the prospect of doing work that has meaning and relevance to them.

Extended Day

 

Think “after care,” but done in the OC way. This program is designed to offer families a way for youth to extend their OC day until 4:00pm. The program will take place in the Gathering Space in the Barn. A supply of board games and card games, simple building materials (such as Kapla blocks), and basic art supplies will be on hand. Youth may bring a book from home, or choose one from the OC youth library to read during this time.

After Program in Ceramics

 


A journey with clay can take a lifetime. Come join Mollie and explore a variety of hand-building techniques, including the Ancient East Asian wedged coil technique as well as pinch, slab, free-form, coiled and sculpture. We will also explore the endless possibilities of surface decoration, including the Ancient Technique of Majolica. Mollie brings a deep passion of ceramics to this program, and is eager to share techniques she has been exploring for years, and has recently been honing through her own participation in ceramics classes.

Shaping Your Life — Right Brain

The Shaping Your Life Right Brain program focuses primarily on the humanities, and offers time for youth-directed projects, small group academic study, the development of practical skills, and occasional trips to other sites in the community.
