Open Connections: The OTHER Basics
by Susan Shilcock and Peter Bergson

The "OTHER basics" include Flexible Thinking, Decision Making and Self-Esteem, three concepts that we believe are integral to the establishment of a foundation for happy, healthy and productive adult life. Key to the Open Connections approach is Flexible Thinking, which represents the ability to be creative, especially when facing a long-standing obstacle or when searching for a new path. Flexible Thinking is natural to young children, then is usually "schooled out" of them through neglect and an over-emphasis on Precision Thinking at the expense of its counterpart, Approximate Thinking. Open Connections: The OTHER Basics describes how adults can help young people build and strengthen their Flexible Thinking prowess, along with other attributes that contribute to a truly satisfying life. by Peter Bergson

This publication is currently out of print and a new edition is in process.
A manual for parents and others interested in nurturing young lives through the design and construction of both indoor and outdoor play spaces that promote "the OTHER basics." Written for the novice woodworker, this booklet provides both guidelines and actual plans, with photographs, to help create multi-level environments that support creative play, purposeful activity, collaboration and years of enjoyment. For bedrooms, family rooms, childcare centers and schools, indoor and out—wherever young people would benefit from having an area designed just for them.
