Supra Docenda (Beyond things needing to be taught)

15-18 year olds - Tuesday, 9:15am - 2:15pm

*New for 2009-2010*This dynamic program is designed for teens who are well-versed in the OC process and eager to engage in in-depth experiences. There are two major components of this program: comprehensive projects (which include both a written piece and a group presentation) and group service work. The comprehensive project topics are chosen by each teen and can range from Ancient Greek theater, chelonians, and gypsies, to global warming, Andy Warhol and ciphers and codes. The service component is designed to accomplish several goals: to provide an opportunity for on-going collaborative group work; to develop and strengthen research skills; to engage in meaningful, real-world productive work; and to add an important component to a teen's college resume. As teens and families prepare for life beyond homeschooling, many become aware that colleges seek applicants who have engaged in extensive service-based work. Possible topics for the service work may include the Green Map project or developing, organizing and implementing a major campaign to meet a need in a local community or in a third-world country. The exact nature of projects, number of participants in each group, and length of projects will depend upon individual youth interests. This program is excellent for self-motivated teens who feel ready to move a step beyond tutorial.
