The Ventures program is centered around creative practices. Much time is spent in the art studio, creating artistic and constructive works, exploring various media. In past years, projects have involved the use of paint, clay, papier maché, wood and fiber, among other materials.
This past year, Ventures studied the indigenous cultures of the Brazilian rainforest. Our exploration led us to the production of a dramatic and musical performance based on a book about the importance of the rainforest.
This year, we will delve into the cultures of other indigenous peoples, such as the native New Zealand Maoris. Many kinds of thinking are incorporated into the Ventures program. Verbal reflection in a group setting, using Balanced Responses, reading aloud and creative writing are practiced. Improvisational, memory, Conceptual Development and outdoor group games are part of the day, along with cooking and eating delicious foods. We have had cooking facilitations on the cuisine of Mexico, France, China, Italy, Japan, the U.S. and other countries. Our large, beautiful campus offers many opportunities for kinesthetic play, outdoor artistic expression and Real Work projects. Over the years, Ventures has constructed chairs based on a design from South Pacific cultures, mosaic stepping stones, sitting benches, and a sculpture-laden herb garden. This year, ideas for outdoor activities include trail building and expanding our bird sanctuary.
