Interviewed May 2020
What year did you start at OC?
What’s one of your earliest OC memories?
One of my earliest OC memories is probably jumping off the fallen tree onto the big beanbag during Open Program. That was one of my favorite OP activities :) Another memory that comes to mind is working at the potions (really just food coloring and water) table in the OP.
What’s your FAVORITE OC memory?
Oh gosh, this is like the hardest question ever! I have been at OC for 15 years now, so the memories I have made here are countless. I am going to be super annoying and not pick just one memory because I literally can't! The Shaping Your Life trips have always been some of my favorite memories. It is just so fulfilling to plan the trip, raise the money, and actually execute the trip! The OC mudders are definitely some of my favorite memories as well as OC community events like Open Mic Nights, Film Festivals, and Family Dances. But a simpler memory that I have of my time in OP so many years ago is of jumping off the fallen tree onto the big beanbag. So in conclusion I can't pick a favorite because I have so many!!!
What’s something that distinguishes OC from other communities or learning environments?
OC is such a special place and differs from other learning environments in so many ways! One aspect of OC that I have always appreciated is how much OC values mutual respect. Facilitators do not look down on the young people, no matter what age they are, but instead treat them as equals. Another aspect of OC that distinguishes it is the amount of trust that is cultivated between Facilitators and young people. I have always felt that the Facilitators are not there to tell you what to do but instead work with you to create fulfilling experiences. And last but certainly not least is the strength of the community. Sure, other learning environments might have dedicated communities as well, but OC is a family.
What will you miss most about OC?
What won't I miss about OC? OC has been my second home for 15 years now and I can't imagine my life without it. I will miss simply being on the lovely campus every week, the creative and supportive community, my wonderful peers, my incredibly dedicated and loving Facilitators, and the wonderful and unique values and philosophy that make OC so special. But the beauty of OC is that even though my time spent as a young person has come to an end, OC will always be a part of my life. OC has always been and will forever be my family!
