I appreciated the way OC accepted my son right away, and I am not just referring to his admittance into [OC]. The first day the students made him feel welcomed. They even clapped for him at the end of the day as they told him how much they appreciated meeting him. He was floored! He told me as soon as he got in the car. “Mom, I have friends!” To be accepted and truly welcomed is a wonderful thing.
I sense that the teachers at OC are part of the class. They allow themselves to grow with the student’s growth and are actually part of the child’s experience. This eliminates the teacher vs. student “us and them” atmosphere. When the students are allowed structured free time and are encouraged to create, it seems as if the place becomes one unit mutually respecting each other. The children seem to respect the school, as well as the building--they become proud to be part of the estabilshement themselves.
